London Calling
London Calling was the third album and opening track from The Clash produced in December 1979. More than 30 years after its release it has now become my theme song. On Monday afternoon Jeremy Grant from the Financial Times posted on Twitter that I will be moving to London for CME Group. He had the scoop. I have had a tremendous career at CME Group since joining the corporate communications team in March 2004 and this is yet another chapter in my work with the exchange.
We’ve seen our international business grow tremendously over recent years -- our electronic trading volume outside of US trading hours now represents 16% of our business, and we have more than 100 employees in London and more than 30 employees in Singapore. As the Director of Corporate Communications for EMEA and Asia there are many opportunities to tell our story to reach existing and new customers.
As much as this opportunity is great for my career I'm more excited for my four kids to experience living abroad at such an early age. As of now our plan is to move in late 2010/early 2011. We have a lot of logistics to manage: selling our house in Chicago, getting with a proper manager to rent our condo near Lake Geneva, selling three cars, finding a place to live (potentially Clapham), and getting our kids into a good school. It's pretty overwhelming. There are also numerous local and regional activities that I'm looking forward to -- attending Arsenal matches at the Emirates, the 2012 Olympics and watching Formula One races during the day rather than early in the morning or late at night.
Of course, there will be plenty of things we'll miss -- family, friends, the Chicago skyline, Ekstra -- but we'll be coming back each year (me for work, Megan and the kids for play) and we expect plenty of visitors. I plan to continue to post my personal experiences here, and will continue to post at B2B Voices and contribute to Ragan's PR Daily. Of course you can always follow me on Twitter as well.
We are grateful for knowing so many people who have lived or currently live in London who have helped us already by talking about places to live and schools. We're still open to talking if you have any thoughts. In the meantime, I'll be in Chicago in the short term and if I don't see you here perhaps we can meet up once I'm grounded in London.
